Cultural Events

Talks and Conferences: The ASU Confucius Institute invites distinguished scholars and professionals to offer lectures and presentations on topics such as Chinese history, literature, and culture. 

Chinese Cultural Activities: As part of our cultural mission, the ASU Confucius Institute regularly presents artistic musical performances and other significant cultural events that showcase the visual and performing arts of China.  

Chinese Culture Contest and Classes: As part of the goal to encourage and to develop young Chinese language learners’ knowledge of China’s rich culture and history, the Institute hosts Chinese speech and writing competitions, photo and drawing contests and classes in calligraphy, Chinese knotting, traditional Chinese painting and crafts. 

School Presentations: The ASU Confucius Institute sends ASU students to K-12 schools as China Ambassadors to present information related to Chinese culture, geography and history.  Students also proffer presentations related to major Chinese holidays such as the ritual and traditions of the Chinese New Year and Moon Festival.

Come experience a Chinese culture performance in Chandler Center for the Arts on Tuesday, September 26. The performance integrates an array of colorful Chinese art forms including artistic Chinese dances, traditional folk songs, soulful vocal and choirs. This show is FREE and open to the public. The School of International Letters & Cultures, together with the ASU Confucius Institute, hosted the Chinese New Year Celebration at the Chinese Table event on Feb. 3, 2017.  Visitors celebrated Chinese New Year with mini presentations, games, and free Chinese food.

Monday, November 14, 2016 - 5:00pm - 8:30pm

The ASU Confucius Institute co-sponsored the events related to Wu Wenguang and the Memory Project filmmakers’ visit from November 14 to 15, 2016. Founded in 2010, the Memory Project is a documentary film series curated by the independent Chinese filmmaker Wu Wenguang. As of 2016, the project features the work of more than two hundred filmmakers who return to their ancestral villages to research the Great Famine period by collecting oral interviews and documentary footage from relatives and other villagers in 22 provinces and 190 villages.

Saturday, November 12, 2016 - 9:30am - 12:00pm

The ASU Confucius Institute and the Flagship Linkages program was proud to announce the Buddy Day Student Video Competition. The only requirement to participate was that you have to be students (grade 9-12) enrolled in a Chinese language class in Arizona schools. A maximum of 3 students could work together to produce a video. Students selected any theme or topic to tell a story, play out a skit or do a performance. The language requirement was Chinese and each video entry must have been 3 minutes or less. Some students got their creative spirit together with some friends and produced a video for all their peers to see!

The submission deadline was October 20, 2016 at linkagesVideoCompetition.wordpress.com.  Award ceremony was held during Buddy Day on November 12th. For more information about the video competition requirements and award categories, please click here.
