ASU Confucius Institute was honored as 2016 Confucius Institute of the Year at the 11th Global Confucius Institute Conference
ASU Vice Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs Stefanie Lindquist accepted this award, which was presented by Vice Premier Liu Yandong of the People’s Republic of China in Kunming, China. For more information, visit

The ASU Confucius Institute and the Flagship Linkages program was proud to announce the Buddy Day Student Video Competition. The only requirement to participate was that you have to be students (grade 9-12) enrolled in a Chinese language class in Arizona schools. A maximum of 3 students could work together to produce a video. Students selected any theme or topic to tell a story, play out a skit or do a performance. The language requirement was Chinese and each video entry must have been 3 minutes or less. Some students got their creative spirit together with some friends and produced a video for all their peers to see!

The submission deadline was October 20, 2016 at linkagesVideoCompetition.wordpress.com.  Award ceremony was held during Buddy Day on November 12th. For more information about the video competition requirements and award categories, please click here.

Attendees learned about student performance and instructional strategies for AP Chinese from guest speakers Dr. T. Richard Chi, Professor Emeritus of Chinese language and linguistics in the Department of Languages and Literature at the University of Utah, Ms. Lisa Podbilski, World Language Department Chair and Upper School Chinese teacher at Louisville Collegiate School, and Ms. Marilyn Mi, Mandarin Secondary Curriculum and Instruction Specialist in the Department of Dual language at the Portland Public Schools. The three guest speakers all have experiences and shared insight on how to use authentic materials and strategies to design instruction, enrich learning, and improve student performance. The ASU Confucius Institute hosted the next ONLINE HSK and HSKK on Saturday, October 16, 2016. Registration Deadline was October 4. Hanyu Shuiping Kaoshi (HSK) is an international standardized test to assess the Chinese language proficiency of non-native speakers engaged in daily life and social activities. The HSK is required when applying to study in Chinese universities.

ASU Confucius Institute presented the Elementary and Secondary winning model teaching videos of the “Innovation in Teaching” Competition. The program not only discussed the video content, lesson plans, and teaching PowerPoints of winning videos, but also shared resources for planning instruction and professional development. It was a great opportunity to interact and share ideas with other Chinese teachers across the valley. The Elementary Video Discussion was “How to Enhance Mandarin Speaking Skills in Daily Class” by Kathy Cabizo from Gavilan Peak Elementary School and the Secondary Video Discussion was “Structure and Deliver Lessons to Increase Students’ Chinese Reading and Speaking Proficiency” by Jen Smetanick from Phoenix Basis School. The ASU Confucius Institute and the Phoenix Chinese Week along with Coronado Elementary School hosted the "Experience Chinese Culture" class for students in the Mandarin Dual Language Immersion program. Students had the opportunity to watch Chinese painting and calligraphy demonstration by a local Chinese artist and participate in making a Chinese hand drum. For more information please click here.

The ASU Confucius Institute and the Consulate General of the People’s Republic of China L.A. presented the China-AZ Cultural Day on September 24th to celebrate the Mid-Autumn Festival for local dignitaries. The renowed China National Orchestra of China National Opera & Dance Drama Theater (中国歌剧舞剧院民族管弦乐团) conducted a special performance for this event. An Arizona State University student and students in ASU CI’s Confucius Classroom at Tarwater Elementary also performed at this special event. Please click here for program.

The 2016 Chinese Story Photo exhibit displayed the natural beauty of China’s majestic landscapes through stories that bring to life the cultural, social and economic experiences of everyday people in China. The ASU Confucius presented a workshop with speaker Dr. Shuhan Wang, Project Director of the Chinese Early Language and Immersion Network (CELIN) at the Asia Society, for administrators and teachers who currently operate or are interested in establishing dual-language Chinese-English immersion programs. Dr. Wang guided the audience through the types and purposes of different immersion programs, share essential characteristics of successful learning and teaching in immersion, and develop strategies and affirmed plan of actions for the academic school year. The information night on Chinese Immersion Program with Dr. Shuhan Wang, Project Director of the Chinese Early Language and Immersion Network (CELIN), which was established to strengthen and expand Chinese language education in early childhood and immersion programs and advocate language learning across the United States and beyond, addressed some frequently asked questions parents of Chinese Immersion students are interested in. Dr. Wang also shared ways for parents to support immersion students and create success.

Dr. Wang has held a variety of prominent positions in language education, including as former Deputy Director of the National Foreign Language Center and Co-Principal Investigator of the STARTALK Project.   She also served as the Executive Director for Chinese Language initiatives at the Asia Society.

The celebration with CUSD administration and the ASU Confucius Institute, staff, and students from Tarwater Elementary School, Bogle Junior High School, and Hamilton High School Confucius Classrooms was filled with the exciting performances presented by Tarwater and Hamilton High students. Everyone came together to celebrate the opening of these three Confucius Classrooms in Chandler Unified School District
