The ASU Confucius presented a workshop with speaker Dr. Shuhan Wang, Project Director of the Chinese Early Language and Immersion Network (CELIN) at the Asia Society, for administrators and teachers who currently operate or are interested in establishing dual-language Chinese-English immersion programs. Dr. Wang guided the audience through the types and purposes of different immersion programs, share essential characteristics of successful learning and teaching in immersion, and develop strategies and affirmed plan of actions for the academic school year. The information night on Chinese Immersion Program with Dr. Shuhan Wang, Project Director of the Chinese Early Language and Immersion Network (CELIN), which was established to strengthen and expand Chinese language education in early childhood and immersion programs and advocate language learning across the United States and beyond, addressed some frequently asked questions parents of Chinese Immersion students are interested in. Dr. Wang also shared ways for parents to support immersion students and create success.

Dr. Wang has held a variety of prominent positions in language education, including as former Deputy Director of the National Foreign Language Center and Co-Principal Investigator of the STARTALK Project.   She also served as the Executive Director for Chinese Language initiatives at the Asia Society.

The celebration with CUSD administration and the ASU Confucius Institute, staff, and students from Tarwater Elementary School, Bogle Junior High School, and Hamilton High School Confucius Classrooms was filled with the exciting performances presented by Tarwater and Hamilton High students. Everyone came together to celebrate the opening of these three Confucius Classrooms in Chandler Unified School District

The OPI workshop helps teachers to understand the key principles of teaching and testing for proficiency. The ASU Confucius Institute and Chinese Flagship Program offers a 4-day OPI workshop - Chinese to provide a valuable foundation for teachers in Chinese language assessment, curriculum design and instruction. Teachers are better prepared to assess the speaking abilities of their students, design their own assessment tools, and determine if students have reached specific benchmark levels.

Harness the Power! The ASU Confucius Institute sponsored a Dual Language Immersion Mandarin Chinese Science Camp on Gateway Pointe Elementary campus. Students continued to practice their Mandarin through the summer while enjoying camp games, hands-on science experiments, and Chinese cultural activities.

The 15-day residential program provided students an opportunity to explore and expand their knowledge in Chinese language and culture through a highly structured curriculum. During the program, students received Chinese language instruction and participate in fun, hands-on cultural activities. The program boasted a living-learning setting where participants will gain first-hand college life experience.

The ASU Confucius Institute hosted the next ONLINE HSK or Hanyu Shuiping Kaoshi on March 19, 2016. Registration Deadline was March 10. Hanyu Shuiping Kaoshi (HSK) is China’s official, standardized Chinese language proficiency test for non-native speakers.

March 5, May 7, September 3, and November 5, 2016 (9:30-11:30am)

ASU CI presented the Elementary and Secondary winning model teaching videos of the “Innovation in Teaching” Competition. People joined to not only discuss the video content, lesson plans, and teaching PowerPoints of winning videos, but also share resources for planning instruction and professional development. Chinese teachers across the valley interacted and shared ideas with each other.

The ASU Confucius Institute co-sponsored an annual Chinese speech competition for students in Grade 1-6 Chinese immersion program at Confucius Classroom at Gavilan  Peak.  More than 150 students participated in the first round of competition.  Each grade then selected six finalists from each grade to join the final competition.

Students had the opportunity to demonstrate their ability in the target language by competing with other students of the same level from different high schools at the ASU World Language Fair. Levels ranged from Novice Mid to Intermediate. Judges were present for each competition, and trophy and certificates were awarded to 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place winners. Each student MUST have pre-registered to participate in the competition. Registration began in January 2016.
