Chinese Language Programs

Professional Development Workshop Series:   The ASU Confucius Institute plays a vital role in the learning and teaching of Chinese language and culture in Arizona.  We offer professional development workshops to prepare teachers of Chinese on topics such as language teaching methodology & strategies, curriculum development, AP Chinese, and student assessment.

Chinese Language Proficiency Tests:  The ASU Confucius Institute is the designated official testing site offering the Hanyu Shuiping Kaoshi (HSK) and the Youth Chinese Test (YCT).  Both tests assess Chinese language proficiency for learners of Mandarin.  HSK is a proficiency test for adult Chinese language learners and is often compared to the English TOEFL exam, while the YCT is a Chinese proficiency test for elementary and middle-school students.

Learn Chinese: The Confucius Institute at Arizona State University offers Beginning Chinese and Individual Tutoring in Chinese.  These courses are designed for individuals to gain a basic knowledge of Mandarin.

Dr. Wang Xiaolu presented a talk in Chinese about "当代中国社会文化的指尖书写 - 智能手机与日常生活." Professor Wang is a professor of Literature at the College of Literature & Journalism and College of Foreign Literature & Cultures at Sichuan University (SCU). He additionally serves as the Director of American Studies Center and Chair of Professorship Committee of College of Ocerseas Education on SCU campus. This event was free and open to the public.

Thursday, September 28, 2017 - 4:30pm

Dr. Wang Xiaolu presented a talk titled "Trans-border and In-between: Americans in Late 19th and Early 20th Century China." The talk focused on a major cultural encounter by tracing the activities of American missionaries, groups and individuals, in late 19th and early 20th century China.

Professor Wang is a professor of Literature at the College of Literature & Journalism and College of Foreign Literature & Cultures at Sichuan University (SCU). He additionally serves as the Director of American Studies Center and Chair of Professorship Committee of College of Ocerseas Education on SCU campus. This event was free and open to the public.

Beginning Chinese Class 1a is designed for people who have completed Beginning Chinese 1 offered by the ASU Confucius Institute. Beginning Chinese Class 2 is designed for people who have successfully completed the Beginning Chinese 1 and 1a.

Sunday, August 20, 2017 - 9:30am - 3:00pm

The ASU Confucius Institute hosted an all-day event about "Effective Language Teaching in a Chinese Classrom," featuring guest speaker Sally Lowe, a Chinese immersion teacher at Barnard Elementary School, author, blogger and webinar presenter for iChineseReaders. 

Morning Session: Proficiency-based Instruction in a Chinese Foreign Language & Immersion Classroom will consist of sharing effective and practical language teaching strategies to promote active student engagement and advance student language.

Afternoon Session: Integrated Language and Subject Matter Teaching in a Chinese Immersion Classroom will consist of learning how to plan and design science curriculum and lessons in a Chinese immersion classroom.
