Chinese Language Programs

Professional Development Workshop Series:   The ASU Confucius Institute plays a vital role in the learning and teaching of Chinese language and culture in Arizona.  We offer professional development workshops to prepare teachers of Chinese on topics such as language teaching methodology & strategies, curriculum development, AP Chinese, and student assessment.

Chinese Language Proficiency Tests:  The ASU Confucius Institute is the designated official testing site offering the Hanyu Shuiping Kaoshi (HSK) and the Youth Chinese Test (YCT).  Both tests assess Chinese language proficiency for learners of Mandarin.  HSK is a proficiency test for adult Chinese language learners and is often compared to the English TOEFL exam, while the YCT is a Chinese proficiency test for elementary and middle-school students.

Learn Chinese: The Confucius Institute at Arizona State University offers Beginning Chinese and Individual Tutoring in Chinese.  These courses are designed for individuals to gain a basic knowledge of Mandarin.

In an effort to promote literacy and life-long reading, the ASU Confucius Institute hosted the first Mandarin Reading Bowl to encourage students to develop interests in reading. This competition was open to students enrolled in the online reading program. Individual category awards included Best Poster Design, Best Story Teller and Best Skit.

Beginning Chinese Class 1a is designed for people who have completed Beginning Chinese 1 offered by the ASU Confucius Institute.

The ASU Confucius Institute’s Mandarin Reading Bowl encourages students to advance Chinese reading skills to promote literacy and life-long reading. Students in Grade 1-6 were encouraged to participate in this competition. Individual category awards included Online Reading Hero, Best Story Book, Best Story Teller and Best Skit.

Tuesday, February 21, 2017 - 9:30am - 12:30pm

Students will have the opportunity to demonstrate their ability in the target language, Chinese, by competing with other students of the same level from different high schools at the ASU World Language Fair. Levels ranged from Novice Mid to Intermediate. There will be judges present for each competition, and trophy and certificates will be awarded to 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place winners. Each student MUST pre-register to participate in the competition. Registration will begin in January 2017.
