Chinese Language Programs

Professional Development Workshop Series:   The ASU Confucius Institute plays a vital role in the learning and teaching of Chinese language and culture in Arizona.  We offer professional development workshops to prepare teachers of Chinese on topics such as language teaching methodology & strategies, curriculum development, AP Chinese, and student assessment.

Chinese Language Proficiency Tests:  The ASU Confucius Institute is the designated official testing site offering the Hanyu Shuiping Kaoshi (HSK) and the Youth Chinese Test (YCT).  Both tests assess Chinese language proficiency for learners of Mandarin.  HSK is a proficiency test for adult Chinese language learners and is often compared to the English TOEFL exam, while the YCT is a Chinese proficiency test for elementary and middle-school students.

Learn Chinese: The Confucius Institute at Arizona State University offers Beginning Chinese and Individual Tutoring in Chinese.  These courses are designed for individuals to gain a basic knowledge of Mandarin.

 

Past Events

Tuesday, February 23, 2016 - 9:30am - 12:30pm

Students had the opportunity to demonstrate their ability in the target language by competing with other students of the same level from different high schools at the ASU World Language Fair. Levels ranged from Novice Mid to Intermediate. Judges were present for each competition, and trophy and certificates were awarded to 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place winners. Each student MUST have pre-registered to participate in the competition. Registration began in January 2016.

Friday, January 22, 2016 (All day) - Saturday, February 6, 2016 (All day)

Students learning Chinese shared "Why I Learn Chinese" through submitting their response to the Performance, Visual Art, or Writing categories of the ASU Chinese New Year Creativity Competition. ASU Confucius Institute selected the best submissions in each category. All winners were invited to perform live, display their works and receive their awards at the ASU Tempe Campus on February 6th.

Saturday, September 26, 2015 (All day)

The ASU Confucius Institute announced its 2nd Student Video Competition in 2015. Any students (grade 7-12) enrolled in a Chinese language class in Arizona schools were allowed to enter.  A maximum of 3 students worked together to produce a video. Students had the opportunity to select any theme or topic to tell a story, play out a skit or do a performance. The language requirement was Chinese, and each video entry must have been no longer than 3 minutes.
