Writing Troubles: Lu Ji’s Ideas and Anxieties about Literary Creation

In the “Rhapsody on Literature” 文賦, Lu Ji 陸機 (261– 303) always expresses his worry that his work may unwittingly be a pale copy of one of the many works he has read or will one day read. Wendy Swartz, Rutgers University, presented a lecture exploring how Lu Ji traces the process of the creative act and the questions his work of meta-literature raises about reading and writing, originality and tradition, and conception and representation.
